Smart Under Cabinet Lighting That Actually Lights the Counter

The ceiling light in most kitchens sits behind you while you cook, which means your own head casts a shadow right on the cutting board.

The ceiling light in most kitchens sits behind you while you cook, which means your own head casts a shadow right on the cutting board. I measured mine once with a cheap lux meter: 140 lux at the counter edge with the overhead on, and over 600 lux after I stuck a two metre LED strip under the wall cabinets. That gap is why smart under cabinet lighting is one of the few upgrades I recommend before almost any other bulb in the house.

It is also one of the easiest to get wrong. Strips peel off, controllers die in the heat above a kettle, and plenty of people end up with a blue glow that looks great in a product photo and terrible on raw chicken. Here is what I have learned fitting these in four kitchens, including two rentals.

Why Smart Under Cabinet Lighting Beats Another Ceiling Bulb

A brighter ceiling bulb adds light to the whole room, but it still comes from the wrong direction. Task light needs to land between you and the work surface, and the underside of a wall cabinet is the only place in most kitchens that does that. The cabinet front also hides the source, so you get light without glare in your eyes.

The smart part matters more than it sounds. Under cabinet lights are the ones you want on at 6 a.m. at low brightness, on at full power while chopping, and off when you leave. A plain wall switch handles one of those three. A strip on a schedule or a motion trigger handles all of them without you touching anything with wet hands.

Strips, Bars or Puck Lights

There are three common formats, and they suit different cabinets.

FormatTypical costBest forMain drawback
Flexible LED strip20 to 45 dollars per 2 mLong runs, rentersVisible dots without a diffuser
Rigid aluminium bar35 to 70 dollars per barEven light, heat controlFixed lengths, more mounting work
Puck lights25 to 50 dollars for a set of 3Short or deep cabinetsPools of light with dark gaps

For most kitchens I pick a strip pressed into an aluminium channel with a frosted cover. The channel costs about 3 dollars per metre, pulls heat away from the LEDs, and turns a row of bright dots into a continuous line. Pucks look dated on a modern counter and leave stripes of shadow between each one.

Get the Light Right Before the App

Specs on the box decide whether you will like the result. Three numbers are worth checking.

  • Brightness: aim for at least 400 lumens per metre. Many cheap RGB strips manage 150, which is mood lighting, not task lighting.
  • Colour rendering: look for CRI 90 or higher. Below that, tomatoes look brown and you cannot judge whether meat is cooked.
  • White channel: an RGBW or RGBCCT strip has dedicated white LEDs. An RGB strip mixes white from red, green and blue, and it always looks slightly purple.

I keep the strip at around 3000K in the evening and push it to 4000K for daytime prep. If you want the reasoning behind those numbers, my guide on choosing the right color temperature for every room covers how warm and cool white behave in different spaces.

The Advice I Ignore About Colour Changing Strips

Almost every listing pushes 16 million colours, music sync and rainbow effects. In a kitchen, I have never seen anyone use them after the first week. What people actually use is two scenes: bright neutral white and a dim warm glow for late night water runs.

So I tell people to skip the flashy RGB kits and spend the same money on a high CRI tunable white strip. You lose the party trick and gain a light that makes food look like food. If you really want colour, put it on the toe kick under the base cabinets, where it is decorative and nobody is trying to read a recipe.

Power and Control Options

Plug in versus hardwired

The simplest setup is a strip with a plug in power supply hidden inside a cabinet, fed from a nearby outlet. Many upper cabinets have one for a microwave or extractor. Hardwiring a driver into a junction box looks cleaner but usually needs an electrician, roughly 120 to 250 dollars depending on where you live.

Which controller to choose

Wifi controllers are cheap but can drop off busy networks. Zigbee or Thread controllers, around 20 to 35 dollars, respond faster and keep working locally if the internet goes down. Whichever you pick, mount it outside the cabinet directly above the hob or kettle. Steam and heat kill controller boards faster than anything else in the kitchen. I have replaced two that were tucked right beside a kettle.

If your kitchen already has a smart wall switch on the main light, decide early whether the strip should follow that switch or stay independent. I explain the trade offs between the two approaches in smart bulbs vs smart switches, and the same logic applies here.

Installing Without Wrecking the Cabinets

  1. Clean the underside with isopropyl alcohol. Kitchen grease is invisible and ruins adhesive.
  2. Mount the channel 3 to 5 cm back from the front edge. Too far back and the light hits the wall; too far forward and you see the strip when seated.
  3. Use small screws or mounting clips for the channel, not only tape. Adhesive softens near the hob and drops within months.
  4. Run the cable through the back corner of the cabinet and clip it every 30 cm.
  5. Test the full length before you close up the channel cover.

In rentals I use removable mounting strips rated for 2 kg and accept a small risk of sag. When I moved out of my last flat, the only sign was four faint marks nobody noticed.

Automations Worth Setting Up

Keep it simple. These three cover nearly everything:

  • A motion sensor that turns the strip on at 10 percent between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., then off after two minutes.
  • A morning schedule at 70 percent and 4000K on weekdays.
  • A button on the fridge or a voice command for full brightness while cooking.

More scenes than that and people stop remembering which button does what. You can see how this fits into a whole house plan in the smart lighting section.

FAQ

Can I cut a smart LED strip to fit my cabinets?

Yes, but only at the marked cut points, usually every 5 to 10 cm. Cut anywhere else and that section goes dark. Measure each cabinet run separately and use connector cables to bridge gaps around a corner or extractor hood.

Do under cabinet lights add much to the electric bill?

Very little. A typical 2 metre strip draws around 18 to 24 watts at full brightness. Running it three hours a day costs roughly 2 to 3 dollars a year at average rates, less if most of that time is at low brightness.

Will a smart strip work with Alexa, Google Home and Apple Home?

Most Matter certified controllers work with all three. Older wifi kits often need their own app plus a skill or link step, and some never reach Apple Home. Check for the Matter logo on the box if you use more than one ecosystem.

Where to Start This Weekend

Measure the length of your wall cabinets, buy a high CRI tunable white strip with an aluminium channel, and put the controller somewhere away from steam. Set one night scene and one cooking scene, then live with it for a week before adding anything else. Most people find those two settings change how the kitchen feels more than any ceiling upgrade ever did.
