Frequently Asked Questions

Short answers to the questions readers send Nikkit most often, plus where to write if yours is not covered here.

Do smart home devices actually need a hub, or does Wi-Fi work fine?

Most modern smart plugs, bulbs, and switches connect directly over Wi-Fi and do not need a separate hub. A hub still helps for larger setups using Zigbee or Z-Wave devices, or when you want automations to keep working during an internet outage.

Are cheap smart home devices actually worth buying?

Sometimes, but the risk usually shows up in reliability and software support over time, not in day one performance. A budget device that stops receiving updates within a year can become a security liability, which matters more for anything with a camera or a lock than for a simple smart plug.

How much data do smart home devices actually collect?

It varies enormously by brand and device type, and a camera or voice assistant collects far more than a simple smart plug. Reading the privacy policy before buying, specifically what data is stored and for how long, tells you more than the marketing page ever will.

Is it safe to install a smart switch myself?

Many smart switches are designed for a straightforward swap of an existing switch, but it still involves working with your home's wiring. If you are not comfortable identifying and safely working with the wires involved, hiring an electrician for the first install is worth the cost.

Why do smart home automations stop working after a while?

Usually a firmware update on one device changes how it reports its status, or a router update changes network behavior in a way that breaks a routine relying on it. Automations built with fewer dependencies tend to break less often than elaborate multi-device chains.

Do you get paid to recommend the devices you review?

Some outbound links on this site are commercial and that is disclosed in our editorial policy, but a recommendation does not change wording because of a commercial relationship. If a device is not worth buying, we say so.

How often do you publish?

When a piece is ready, which is why the gaps between posts are uneven. Everything we have published stays available in the blog archive, and articles are updated with a dated note when a change alters the advice.
