Alexa Routines Worth Setting Up and the Ones to Skip

Most people set up an Echo, ask it for the weather for a fortnight and then forget about everything except timers.

Most people set up an Echo, ask it for the weather for a fortnight and then forget about everything except timers. Alexa routines are where a smart speaker starts earning its place, because one phrase or one trigger can run five or six actions you would otherwise do by hand. This guide covers the Alexa routines worth setting up, exactly how to build them, and the popular ones that tend to get switched off within a week.

I have been building routines across three homes and roughly 40 connected devices for several years. The ones below are the survivors: routines that still run every day because they solve a real annoyance.

How Alexa routines work

Every routine has two parts. A trigger starts it and one or more actions follow. You build them in the Alexa app under More, then Routines, then the plus icon.

Triggers include:

  • A voice phrase, such as "Alexa, good night"
  • A schedule, at a fixed time or at sunrise or sunset
  • A smart home device, such as a motion sensor, door contact or smart plug
  • An alarm being dismissed
  • Arriving at or leaving a location, using your phone

Actions cover almost anything Alexa can do: control lights and plugs, play music or news, speak custom text, set volume, send a notification, wait for a set time, or trigger another routine. You can add a "Wait" action between steps, which is the secret to routines that feel natural instead of everything happening at once.

The Alexa routines worth setting up first

The good night routine

This is the single most useful routine in most homes. Trigger: the phrase "Alexa, good night". Actions:

  1. Turn off all downstairs lights and the living room smart plugs.
  2. Set the bedroom lamp to 20 percent warm white.
  3. Lock the smart lock if you have one, and set the thermostat to 17 degrees.
  4. Set the Echo volume to 3 so it does not shout if it wakes you.
  5. Wait 20 minutes, then turn off the bedroom lamp.

Build it once, and you will notice the difference every single night.

The leaving home check

Trigger: your phone leaving a geofence around the house, or a phrase such as "Alexa, I'm heading out". Actions: turn off every light and plug except the fridge, drop the thermostat by 3 degrees, and send a notification to your phone if any door contact still shows open. That last step catches a back door left ajar more often than you would expect.

The sunset lights routine

Trigger: sunset, with an offset of minus 15 minutes. Actions: turn on the porch light and a hallway lamp at 60 percent. Because it follows the actual sunset, it adjusts itself through the seasons with no editing. Pair it with a sunrise routine to switch the porch light off. Our guide to smart porch light setup with sunset schedules has more detail on the outdoor side.

The bin night reminder

Trigger: a schedule, every Tuesday at 7.30 pm, or whatever your collection night is. Action: Alexa announces "Bins go out tonight, recycling week" on every Echo in the house. If collections alternate weeks, create two routines that each repeat every two weeks. It is a tiny routine that saves a surprising amount of grief.

The kitchen motion light

Trigger: a motion sensor in the kitchen between 10 pm and 6 am. Actions: turn the under cabinet lights on at 30 percent, wait 5 minutes, then turn them off. Nobody fumbles for a switch at 2 am, and nobody gets blinded by the ceiling light.

A lot of routine ideas look great in a list and then get turned off almost immediately. Here is where I disagree with the usual recommendations.

The full morning briefing. The classic suggestion is a routine that reads the weather, your calendar, the traffic, the news and a joke when you dismiss your alarm. In practice, it runs four or five minutes, you stop listening after the weather, and it plays to an empty room once you have gone to shower. A shorter version, weather plus your first calendar event, is genuinely useful. The full briefing is not.

Welcome home announcements. Alexa greeting each family member by name when they arrive sounds charming. After a few days it becomes irritating, especially when your phone's location drifts and it welcomes you home while you are still at the shop around the corner.

Routines that rely on presence sensing for security. Locking doors or arming cameras purely based on everyone's phones leaving can fail when one phone battery dies or location services are switched off. For anything security related, use a firm trigger such as a phrase or a door contact, not phone location alone.

Making routines reliable

Routines fail for boring reasons. These habits keep them working.

ProblemFix
Device renamed and routine stops workingOpen the routine and reselect the device after any rename
Alexa mishears the trigger phraseUse two or three distinct words and avoid phrases close to other commands
Actions happen out of orderAdd a 2 to 5 second Wait action between dependent steps
Routine runs on the wrong EchoSet "From" to a specific device rather than the one you spoke to
Location trigger misfiresEnlarge the geofence to at least 200 metres

If your household shares one account, setting up separate voice profiles lets routines respond differently to each person. See our guide on voice assistant profiles for every family member. And if you are still deciding on a platform, Alexa or Google Home and what actually differs day to day compares how the two handle routines.

A sensible way to start

Do not build ten routines in one evening. Start with good night and the sunset lights, live with them for a week and adjust timings until they feel right. Then add one routine at a time, each aimed at a specific small annoyance in your house. The best Alexa routines are the ones you stop noticing because they simply happen.

Frequently asked questions

How many actions can an Alexa routine have?

Amazon does not publish a strict limit, and routines with 15 or more actions work fine in practice. Very long routines become hard to edit and troubleshoot. Splitting them into two routines, with one triggering the other, keeps things manageable.

Can Alexa routines run without the internet?

Most routines need an internet connection because they are processed in the cloud. Some Echo models with a built-in smart home hub can run a limited set of local actions for Zigbee devices. If your internet is unreliable, keep critical lights on physical switches as a backup.

Why is my Alexa routine not working?

The most common causes are a renamed or removed device, a trigger phrase Alexa mishears, or a location trigger that is too tight. Open the routine in the app, reselect each device and test it with the play button. Check that the Echo and app are on current software.
